This series of small paintings started out as a joke. Neighbors of mine had their apartment refit (against their will, it needs to be ascertained) with some really nasty chevron-patterned wall reinforcement fabric that covers everything in their flat. Like, talk of a way to really ruin a beautiful Haussmannian flat. Anyway, for their housewarming party I painted a small sheet of my own chevrons and gave it to them.

And since I had laying around a number of small format painting surfaces, I made a series out of it.

Cette série de petites peintures a commencé comme une blague. L'appartement de mes voisins a été complètement repeint (en dépit de leurs protestations, il faut le noter) avec une toile de protection des murs absolument atroces couvertes de méchants chevrons en relief, une véritable insulte à ce magnifique appartement haussmannien. Mais bref, cela m'a donné l'idée de leur offrir une petite peinture pleine de mes propres chevrons pour leur pendaison de crémaillère.

Et comme j'avais un lot de petites surfaces à peindre sous le coude, j'en ai fait une série.

Chevrons #2-#7

These 6 oval paintings can be either presented together in a circular shape, like in the above image, or individually, in which case their orientation must be with the chevrons pointing upwards.

Ces 6 peintures peuvent être présentées ensemble, disposées comme ci-dessus en cercle, ou bien individuellement. Dans ce cas, chaque toile devra être orientée de façons à ce que ses chevrons pointent vers le haut.

Chevrons #8 (Golden opportunities 1)

This also has a story to tell; I was given 5 canvasses without a frame, a clever contraption made of a single sheet of canvas on cardboard that you fold and tuck to create a very light –no wood!– thick frame. I experimented somewhat with some "pouring" material, which I left to dry in the sun, with the wind and the dust and the leaves, and it really was horrible, like a pool of vomit, really. You can see the video below if -you don't believe me.

But it made for a really nice chevron with some added golden paint. And that's where this sub-series starts.

Ceci a aussi une histoire. On m'avait fait cadeau de 5 toiles sans chassis, un concept amusant où l'on plie une grande feuille de carton entoilé de façon à en faire un tableau en relief léger comme tout. J'ai expérimenté avec du médium de « pouring », et j'ai réalisé quelque chose d'absolument épouvantable que j'ai laissé séché dehors, au soleil, avec la poussière, la pollution des bagnoles, les feuilles qui tombent, etc., c'était vraiment comme du vomi. (Cf. vidéo ci-dessous) Mais avec un peu de peinture dorée, on récupère n'importe quoi, apparemment. Et c'est comme ça qu'a démarré cette sous-série.
